Paper Recycling
Once Beacon Secure has shredded your confidential documents, we send them to paper mills to recycle. This amounts to 3 million pounds of recycled paper each year! Here are some paper recycling facts from the American Forest & Paper Association (www.paperrecycles.org):
- Of all the paper we use in the U.S., more than 57 percent was recovered for recycling during 2008 — a higher percentage than ever recorded
- In 2008, paper collections for recycling were 52 million tons - 340 pounds for each person in the United States, up from 233 pounds in 1990!
- In the U.S., the amount of paper being recovered far exceeds the amount sent to landfill sites, saving 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space for every ton of paper that is recovered
- In 2008, enough paper was recovered for recycling to fill 125 Empire State Buildings
- The paper industry has established a new goal of 60 percent recovery by 2012. Each percentage point represents nearly one million additional tons of recovered paper — enough to fill more than 14,000 railroad cars
- A 2007 AF&PA survey revealed that 87 percent of the U.S. population has access to community recycling programs
- About four out of five paper mills in the U.S. use recovered fiber from recycled paper to make some or all of their products
